A survey of the red ring disease of coconuts in the Pomeroon river
1970
Daleep Singh, N. (Ministry of Nat'l Dev. and Agric. (Guyana). Res. Div.)
Low yields and crop failures of the coconut industry in the Pomeroon river are mainly due to the combined damage from bud rot disease, red ring and poor drainage. But rot disease, caused by Phytophthora palmivora Butler was responsible for 30 % of the death in coconut palms. Red ring disease accounted for 7 % and the insect pests, Strategus aloeus F. and Castnia daedalus Cram, were responsible for 6 %. Poor drainage is another major problem contributing to poor growth. Control measures recommended are improved drainage, cultural control, chemical control and the use of a variety resistant to red ring disease, "Cokerite"
