Behaviour of four high yielding photo-period insensitive rice varieties in West Bengal

The performance of four recommended high yielding photoperiod insensitive rice varieties when sown during different months in West Bengal situation was examined. The duration of the crop was longer when sown in October, November, December and January due to cool temperature than the crops sown in other months. Plant height, panicle length and leaf area index were higher in the crops sown in May, June and July. September sowing affected tillering of the plant due to cool temperature, while the crop sown in October had maximum number of tillers, but with reduced panicle length. Number of grains per panicle was high in the crops sown in November and December. Thousand grain weight was least influenced by the environment in which the crop was grown. Grain/straw ratio was highest in November-sown crop followed by the crop sown in December, while grain yield was very poor in crops sown in September and October
