Jojoba - potentially a profitable crop for marginal lands of the sugar industry

Jojoba is an oil crop with vast potential for marginal lands; particularly for those areas which are saline, short of water or too steep for sugar cane. The seeds produced contain 50 % oil and 33 % protein. The oil, which is similar to sperm whale oil has important industrial, pharmaceutical and cosmetic application and current usage of jojoba products is limited only by lack of supply. Current high returns in the order of US$8,000 per acre per year for 7 year-old fields is expected to last for some time because of rising demand.
