Yield and fruit quality of peach (Prunus persica (L) Batsch) as affected by summer and winter pruning ["Suncrest" cultivar, percentage of the total soluble solids, fruit diameter, fruit numbers]

Thrity, five-year-old "Suncrest" peach trees (Prunus persica (L) Batsch) were summer pruned in the period 1986 to 1988. Pruning dates (treatments) were July 1st and 15th, August 1st and 15th and control (winter pruning). All summer-pruned trees were pruned annually during the dormant season. The summer pruning practiced in this study was of the thinning out pruning type. Combining summer and winter pruning had no effect on the percentage of flowering or yield per tree and it's effect on fruit set was inconsistent. The combination treatments increased fruit number per tree and reduced weight and diameter of the fruit. The effect of summer pruning was negligible on fruit flesh firmness and inconsistent on percentages of total soluble solids (TSS%) and titratable acidity (TA%) of fruits
