Production of maternal haploids from interspecific cross of Nicotiana tabacum with N. africana

This experiment was conducted to investigate some of the factors affecting the number of haploids derived from N. africana method. The number of haploids produced by N. africana method was influenced by the growing condition of the paternal plants rather than maternal plants. Thus, paternal plants grown at 30, 25, 18 and 26-22-18 deg C produced 2.89, 1.40, 0.20 and 0.53 haploids per capsule, respectively, while maternal plants grown at above temperature and in the field produced 0.36 to 0.82 haploids per capsule. There was no significant difference in the number of haploids produced by N. africana method between maternal plant starved and well fed with fertilizer. More maternal haploids were obtained from the instant pollination of paternal pollen after emasculation of maternal plant flower
