Viability and germinability studies on uredospores of Puccinia allii

Puccinia allii (DC) Rud. infects a number of Allium species which can be grown throughout the year in Hongkong. Hence a build up of linoculum potential is unavoidable. Viability tests showed that spores stored at the optimum condition had a decreasing viability with time. It dropped from 95% to 14% germination after 60 days. Germination was drastically reduced if the spores were stored either at an RH of 100% or 0%. Temperature effect was more important in determining spore viability. Application of extracts of leaf and inflorescence stalk resulted in lowered spore germinability. The optimum temperature range for germination was between 20 to 40deg C at a pH range of 7 to 9. There was more than 50% reduction in germination if the pH was either below 6 or above 10. Considering the diversity of factors which would affect spore viability and germinability, it is obvious that the inoculum potential of this rust fungus could be prevented from building up by various cultural practices, or by using dilute extracts of leaves as protective sprays to suppress spore germination.
