An extensive study of plankton in the Bardawil Lagoon, Egypt

A study of the phytoplankton and zooplankton distribution in the Bardawil lagoon was carried out from 16 April to 3 May 1985. 166 plankton species were identified. Among the phytoplankton, Diatoms and Dinoflagellates were dominant in number of species and biomass. Amphora ovalis was the most abundant species found in most stations. Filamentous blue-green algae and green algae were also recorded. Zooplankton populations in most stations were poor in variety of species, compared to phytoplankton. They were dominated by Copepoda and Tintinnids, followed by Ostracoda. Other groups were present in small numbers. Most plankton species occur over a relatively wide range of habitats, dominated by a fairly large number of euryhaline neritic species
