Growth and carcass traits of crossbred boars of exotic and Nigerian indigenous pigs

An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the growth and carcass traits of crossbred progenies of exotic and Nigerian indigenous pigs in the light weight range of 50 kg. Four boars per litter of progeny born to the exotic and indigenous sows were included in the analyses. Progenies of Large White (LW) and Indigenous (Ind.) sows which were mated to either LW or Hampshire (Hamp.) boars were used for the study. They were fed twice daily on commercial pig diet. Significant dam differences in growth and carcass traits between the progenies were found. The indigenous crosses were about 17 days late to attain 50 kg slaughter weight, had 2.1% shorter carcass length and 16% higher back-fat with a mean of 63 cm and 21.4 mm respectively compared to carcasses or other crosses. A highly significant lower rate of growth (kg/day) of 0.309 compared to 0.345 and 0.380 of the exotic crosses (P/0.01) was also recorded. However a non-significant difference was noted in the joint proportion of the carcasses. This shows that remarkable differences do not exist between the progenies of exotic and indigenous crossbred pigs at this weight range when produced for market outlets that require carcasses with small joints
