Substitution of corn by fortified cassava meal in broiler ration [Philippines]

In study 1, cassava meal was fortified with soybean oil meal (C-SBOM), imported fish meal (C-FM), cowpea (C-CP), mungbean (C-MB), 50:50 mungbean and pigeon pea (C-MB + PP) and copra meal (C-CM) to equal its crude protein to corn. Likewise, crude coco oil and cassava leaf meal were added to provide the same energy and xanthophyll contents as in good yellow corn (GYC). The apparent metabolizable energy of fortified cassava meal (FCM) ranged from 3101-3268 kcal/kg compared to 3074 kcal/kg for corn. The true metabolizable energy of FCMs ranged from 3478-3741 kcal/kg compared to 3565 kcal/kg for corn. The feed consumption of C-MB + PP based ration of commercial broiler was higher (P0.05) than GYC based (control) ration. There was no significant difference in body weight, feed conversion efficiency, growth rate, mortality, dressing percentage and abdominal fat of broilers between FCM and GYC based rations. The avian-skin pigmenting ability of FCM based rations was markedly lower than the control ration. In Study 2, cassava meal was used in broiler ration by approximately farmer's estimation without balancing for nutrients. The general performance of broilers in terms of feed consumption, body weight and feed conversion efficiency fed on cassava based rations were significantly lower (P0.05) than on the commercial broiler rations.
