Growth and yield performance of maize and mungbean intercropped under different N levels and planting distances [Philippines]

Field experiment was conducted to evaluate response of maize and mungbean intercrop to varying levels of N fertilization and planting distances. Four levels of nitrogen were used: 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha. The 4 planting distances employed were 75 x 25 cm with 1 maize plant/hill plus 1 row mungbean between maize row, 75 x 50 cm with 3 maize plant/hill plus 1 row mungbean between maize row and 100 x 50 cm with 2 maize plant/hill plus 2 row mungbean between maize row. The combined grain yield of maize and mungbean was highest from plants fertilized at 120 kg N/ha (4.79 mt/ha) followed by 80 kg N/ha (4.28 mt/ha) while the lowest was at 0 kg N/ha (2.41 mt/ha). In terms of individual crop response to N, maize yield increased with increment of N level from 0 to 150 kg N/ha whereas the reverse was true for mungo bean. Grain yield of maize was not affected by planting distance. The differences in mungbean yield was due to differences in the number of mungbean row between maize rows with an average yield of 0.40, 0.45, 0.56 and 0.57 mt/ha from the maize plots spaced 75 x 25, 75 x 50, 100 x 25 and 100 x 50 cm respectively. Highest grain yield of maize plus mungbean and maize alone under Central Luzon [Philippines] condition can be attained by applying N fertilizer at the rate of 80 to 120 kg/ha at planting distances considered in the study. Mungbean can be planted in between rows of maize for additional space from the same unit area and time.
