Yield and yield components of corn and cowpea as affected by fodder harvest dates of cowpea in a corn-cowpea intercropping [Philippines]

Corn-cowpea intercropping for grain and fodder was conducted at IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] farm in 1984-85 dry season. IPB corn variety no. 1 and 2 medium maturing cowpea varieties (TVx 3381-02F and TVx2939-09D) were used in the study. Green pod and dry bean yield of both cowpea varieties decreased significantly with intercropping due to reduced number of pods per plant and 100 seed-weight. Fresh fodder and fodder dry matter yield increased until 3 primings of green pod. Crude protein content and in-vitro dry matter digestibility of fodder of both varieties were significantly reduced as harvest date was delayed after 50% flowering stage. Crude fiber content, however, increased as a result of lignification. TVx 3381-02F gave higher green pod, dry bean and fodder yield and better fodder quality than TVx 2939-09D. Grain yield of corn also decreased as harvest of cowpea intercrop was delayed from 50% flowering until 3 primings of dry pod. No significant difference in fresh stover and stover dry matter yield was obtained between monoculture and intercrop treatments. Crude protein contents significantly increased until 3 primings of dry pods. In vitro dry matter digestibility was also better than the monocrop.
