Studies to reduce temperature were conducted at Sto. Nino, Cagayan [Philippines] at 18 degrees N and 50 m asl, to determine the effects on the growth and yield performance of white potato planted during the early, mid, late and very late parts of the planting season. Mulching was beneficial in the reduction of soil temperature and conservation of soil moisture, irrigation cooled the soil and maintained the water requirement of the crop although this treatment was less important during the early planting date. Corn mix crop at 9:1 intercepted some of the incoming light which reduced daytime air and soil temperature. Treatment composed of corn + mulch + irrigation, mulch + irrigation and corn + mulch + irrigation gave more advantages over the check and treatments with sole systems in terms of yield and agronomic characters. Treatments with irrigation and mulch were so important during the mid and later planting dates. However, the additive effects of corn mix crop was beneficial. The use of double row bed resulted in faster ground cover and higher yield per unit area over the single row bed.
