Response of rice to deep placement of nitrogen at reproductive stage [Philippines]

The effect of nitrogen deep placement around panicle initiation on yield and yield components was examined using several varieties having different growth characteristics in dry and wet seasons in IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] field. In the dry season, spikelet number of medium maturing varieties increased while percent filled grain decreased. The spikelet formation and yield of IR36 an early maturing variety, was not significantly affected. In the wet season, deep placement of nitrogen at 10 days after panicle initiation improved ripening and yield of the medium maturing varieties.
