Lime management in upland rice-corn cropping sequence in acid soils of Claveria [Misamis Oriental, Philippines]

Lime management in an upland rice-corn cropping sequence, consisting rates and method incorporation was evaluated in upland acid soils of Claveria, Misamis Oriental during the wet season of 1985-1986 crop year. The results showed that both crops in the upland rice-corn cropping sequence responded to lime application. The grain yield of upland rice was a linear function of the lime rates (0, 3 and 6 t/ha). Combination of animal and tractor plowing was superior than either animal or tractor plowing only regardless of lime rates. The dry matter yield of corn planted after upland rice to pick up the residual effects and the soil pH determined after the rice harvest also significantly responded to lime application. Where 3 t/ha lime was incorporated using tractor plowing, pH increases were higher than in the animal plowed plots. Tractor plowed plots, however, had lower pH increment than animal plowed plots in the 6 t/ha rate. These results indicate that when small quantities of lime are used, the material should be incorporated into the surface layer as in animal plowing to obtain best results.
