Enhancing efficiency and reducing application costs of herbicides by adding adjuvants

The mixing of herbicides has become more popular and is economically practical not only in controlling more weeds but in saving application costs and time. However, antagonism among herbicides in mixtures to reduce effectiveness of herbicides sometimes occurs. A series of greenhouse experiments indicated that the increased activity of barban when added with Atplus 411F or Renex-36 surfactants overcome the antagonistic effect of 2,4-D ester or MCPA ester on wild oat fresh weight reduction compared to barban plus 2,4-D or MCPA without surfactants. In the field, the barban plus Atplus 411F and ammonium sulfate treatment gave better wild oat control and increased wheat yield, as compared to barban alone. The treatment did not affect wheat tolerance. In the laboratory, more (14C)-barban was absorbed by wild oat seedling when the barban was mixed with Atplus 411F or Renex-36 than applied alone.
