Albendazole is the first benzimidazole anthelmintic to have useful activity against nematodes, cestodes and trematodes of ruminants as well as having an ovicidal action. Since it became available for use, it has played an important role in contributing to the health of livestock in Asian and Australian countries. Toxicology studies have shown the product to have a wide safety margin in cattle up to ten times normal dose. Dosing techniques depend on management practices. Dosing with oral suspensions are favoured in grazing areas of the region but the administration to cattle and carabao of a 20 percent bolus formulation at the rate of one bolus per 100 kg liveweight facilitates the procedure for the small farmer. Suspension, paste and bolus forms are equally consistent in their efficacy rates. Albendazole is odourless, tasteless and non-irritant. All formulations are readily acceptable and activity of the compound is independent of the function of the oesophageal groove. It possesses a wide spectrum of activity against the gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms, tapeworms, and liver fluke of cattle, carabao and goats. Because of its spectrum, the anthelmintic product continues to be of value in livestock production strategies where dosing schedules are applied against parasitosis.
