Effect of nutrient, salt and osmotic stresses on proline accumulation in oilseed rape plants

Nutrient and osmotic stresses caused changes in nitrogen metabolism (decrease of protein content and proline accumulation) of oilseed rape plants grown in water culture. In response to Ca, Mg, P, K, Fe deficiency and osmotic and salt stresses differential accumulation of proline in leaves and stems was found. The highest proline accumulation in the leaves was found under the osmotic stress caused by PEG and, in the case of nutrient stress, under the effect of Ca and Mg deficiency; in the stems the highest proline accumulation was observed under Ca stress and the osmotic stress. In the roots proline accumulation was considerably lower. These changes appear to be an additional indicator of mineral elements deficiency in oilseed rape before or during occurrence of the visual symptoms. (Authors)
