Yam evaluation studies in Trinidad and Tobago

Yield and culinary studies were conducted with a number of Dioscorea alata cultivars. The varieties: Murapoi White and Murapoi Off-White are recommended for field studies. These 2 cultivars gave yields similar to that of the standard cultivar White Lisbon and were found to be of acceptable eating quality. Tubers are globular and this feature should facilitate mechanical harvesting. Both cultivars are, however, susceptible to anthracnose disease. A number of other cultivars seem promising and are undergoing further evaluation
