A study of group field packers in southern Dominica

Information acquired from the study reveals that: 1) group field packers on average attained a 74 % quality rating (Field Pack quality standard at 70 % is considered the satisfactory level for Geest), 2) the main quality faults are bruises, latex stains and scars and scratches, 3) group field pack stability was found to be related to the internal dynamics or the forces present within the groups which reflected a lack of cooperation, non-participation and passiveness among members, 4) substantial evidence indicated that there is a strong likelihood that group field packing has been accepted and will continue irrespective of the establishment of Inland Buying Depots. Based on the findings two major recommendations were made: 1) clinical workshops on fruit quality to improve the quality standard by standardizing the varying perceptions of banana quality assessment between field packers and Geest inspectors, 2) an educational approach in group dynamics to increase awareness of group members
