The potential for pasture improvement is looked at along with the role of grasses and legumes in animal production systems. The criteria for the selection of pasture species has been laid out. Based on the author's experience and association with CARDI's Forage Legume Program executed in several Caribbean islands, pasture species are listed and identified for a pasture improvement programme in Trinidad and Tobago, which includes both grasses and legumes
