Observations on the reproductive performance of three purebreds and one crossbred group of ewes on the Blenheim Sheep Station in Tobago, West Indies

The lambing and weaning percentages and litter sizes in Barbados Blackbelly, West African, Blackhead Persian and Crossbred ewes were determined from data collected during a lambing season in 1982 on the Blenheim Sheep Station in Tobago. The lambing percentages were significantly different among the breeds and were 200, 167, 159 and 113 for Barbados Blackbelly, West African, Crossbred and Blackhead Persian ewes respectively. Litter sizes varied significantly among breeds. The Barbados Blackbelly had the highest number of multiple births (72 %) and the Blackhead Persian ewes had the lowest (15 %). At weaning, the Blackhead Persian ewes weaned the highest number (92 %) of the lambs born alive and the Barbados Blackbelly the lowest (67 %). The average number of lambs weaned per ewe was 1.43, 1.35, 1.31 and 1.03 for the West African, Crossbreds, Barbados Blackbelly and Blackhead Persian, respectively
