A brief history of Caroni Research Station's policy and objectives is given and the present status of research programmes and the future thrust in sugar cane production and diversification are outlined. The results of research in sugar cane for the period 1973 to 1982 are summarized with special emphasis on the Variety Evaluation and Selection Programme. Other areas of research reviewed are: weed control, soil chemistry, soil physics and water relations, agrometeorology, sugar cane growth and maturation, entomology chemical control and biological control of Diatraea and froghopper (Aeneolamia varia saccharina)
