The paper discusses the precarious future of the sugar cane industry in the face of competition from other sweeteners. Considers sweeteners (such as beet sugar, high fructose corn syrup and aspartame) already being marketed as well as many ultra-cheap potential sweeteners awaiting official approval and market acceptance. The author fears that various bilateral agreements which now guarantee cane sugar markets will eventually collapse with disastrous consequences for sugar cane dependent economies
