Effect of plant density on yield and yield components of jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) in the southern Guinea savanna zone of Nigeria

3 inter-row spacings, 25, 50 and 75 cm, and 4 intra-row spacings, 5, 10, 20 and 30 cm. were tested in a randomized block design with 4 replications carried out over 3 seasons. Combinations of these spacings gave plant populations ranging from 44,000 to 800,000 plants/ha. Dry fibre yields decreased with increased row width, with the highest yield obtained at the 25 cm width and increased with increased intra-row spacing up to 10 cm, thereafter decreasing. Inter-row spacing in the range of 25 to 75 cm, significantly affected jute butt diameter, it was significantly increased with increased row spacing, intra-row spacing had no effect. A spacing of 50 x 20 was found to give the highest seed yield in two consecutive seasons, this spacing was found to increase yield components, number of capsules/plant and number of branches/sq m. Interaction between inter- and intra-row spacings was significant for all parameters except number of seeds/capsule
