The effects of antitranspirants on the growth, yield and water relations of sweet corn (Zea mays L. var. Saccharata Sturt) cv. "Sure Sweet"

Water stress can be a major constraint to sweet corn (Zea mays L. var saccharata Sturt) production during periods of limited water availability. The potential of Vapor gard, a film forming antitranspirant and alachor, a stomatal closing one, for alleviating the adverse effects of water stress on the growth, yield and water relations of the crop were evaluated in five experiments conducted under greenhouse conditions. Both stressed and unstressed plants treated with Vapor gard (2.5 and 5 %), and alachor (40 mg a.i./litre) showed higher leaf area, longer leaf area duration, higher leaf and stem dry weights and higher yields than untreated plants. Stressed plants treated with Vapor gard also exhibited increased adaxial leaf diffusive resistance, reduced transpiration and higher leaf water potential. Maximum efficacy of these antitranspirants was obtained by timely application after the onset of stress
