Evaluation of cattle trace minerals status in specific regions of Guatemala

Soil, forage and blood and liver samples from pregnant/lactating cows and growing steers were collected within the northeast, central and southwest regions of Guatemala in both dry and rainy seasons. 94-100 % of plasma, liver and forage samples in the northeast indicated Cu deficiency but soil Cu was normal. Low correlation between soil and forage mineral content suggests that soil analyses are not useful in assessing available mineral supplies. Se, Zn and Mn showed regional deficiencies. Some tissue concentration differences were found between animal classes, being higher in lactating animals
