The effect of crossbreeding on some reproductive traits of pigs

Single crossing, combination crossing and rotational crossing were carried out on 350 sows of the Swedish, Dutch and German Landrace and Great Yorkshire. One group of pure-bred Swedish Landrace was used as a control. On the basis of the results obtained, it can be concluded that crossing produced satisfactory effects upon improving reproductive characteristics of sows (age at the first service, duration of gravidity, the number of farrowed piglets, the number of stillborn and dead piglets, weight of a farrow after weaning and average weight of piglets after weaning). The best results were obtained with sows subjected to combination and rotational crossing and the least satisfactory results were obtained by single crossing, while the pure-bred (Swedish Landrace) sows were, regarding the production, half way between the above 2 groups.
