Ultrastructure of Sertoli cells in some ruminants

This study deals with the ultramorphologic characteristics of the Sertoli cells, their inter-relationship and their relation to the germ cells in the seminal epithelium in the domestic he-goat, ram, bull as well as in stag. It has been established that there are no essential differences in the composition of the Sertoli cells between the domestic and the wild ruminants. However, there are certain differences in the number of the Sertoli cells and in the composition of the peritubular tissue depending on the season or the sexual activity of the animals. In all the studied animals there have been found some ultramorphologic characteristics which have not been found in other Sertoli cells but which are characteristic for ruminants. In sexually mature animals 2 types of Sertoli cells, namely a light coloured and a dark cell have been found.
