Degradation of malathion, sumithion and dimethoate in soils

Two soils were treated with malathion, sumithion and dimethoate organophosphorus pesticides each at the rates of 0, 20, 200 and 2000 ppm level, and incubated for 80 days at field capacity moisture. The soil samples were collected after 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80 days of incubation, and analysed the residues by GC after establishing an internal standard method. Malathion, sumithion and dimethoate degraded gradually with incubation time. Initially after 0-day of observation, the recovery results were 99-100% for all cases and the degradation rate changed with increasing the levels of pesticides. The residues were detected upto 60 days with 20 ppm level, and upto 80 days with high dosages of the compounds. First order rate constants were applied to the results, and the half life time was measured with varied from 14 to 21 days. The overall results concluded that 97-99% of the pesticides disappeared after 80 days of observation, and the rate was linear.
