Seasonal patterns and varietal differences in dry matter accumulation and potassium absorption in shoot and root of jute (Corchorus spp.)

A study on the distribution pattern of biomass accumulation, potassium concentration and uptake in shoot and root of five varieties of each C. capsularis and C. olitorius jute at definite development stage were undertaken. The results revealed that among the varieties, the JRC-321 showed the highest percent of biomass accumulation (76%), concentration (0.96%) and K uptake (70%) in shoot and root at 105 days of growth. Maximum shoot/root DM accumulation and K absorption ratio attained during 45-75 days in all the varieties of both species barring a few exception in olitorius varieties (JRO-26E, JR)-7835 and JRO-524). In the pattern of K absorption (shoot+root) the major share i.e. 54-70 percent of K was accumulated during the growth period of 75-105 days in capsularis varieties. But in olitorius, the percentage of K absorption by JRO-36E, JRO-7835 and JRO-524 during 45-75 days and 75-105 days were 41.9-46.6 and 47.6-49 percent respectively.
