The role of dredging in flood alleviation [in Bangladesh]
1989
Riddell, J.F.
The deposition of very large quantities of sediment in river channels and canals causes problems for flood discharge and navigation. While it is unlikely that removal of the sediment is a practical proposal in all situations, dredging may provide a useful solution in critical areas. The effectiveness of any dredging operation will depend upon the dredging capacity available, the sites for disposing of the dredged material and the overall efficiency of the plant and equipment. The contribution examines the range of dredging equipment considered appropriate for work in Bangladesh and suggests research and development which can be undertaken to optimise the use of available equipment.
