Effect of phosphorus (P) application rates on extractable iron (Fe) in some selected soils

A decrease in DTPA-TEA extractable Fe was observed with increasing levels of P applications, although this descries was not significant in all soils. The decrease in extractable Fe may be due to precipitation of Fe as iron- phosphate. DTPA-TEA extractable Fe content of soils at pH 7.0 showed almost no change. This may be attributed to surface precipitation of phosphate on calcium carbonate in calcarious soil. Another reason may be that solubility of Fe decreases at pH above 7.0, so iron can not react with phosphates and remain unaffected due to high levels of P. High levels of Ca and Mg may also suppress the solubility of Fe in soils. The results of the experiment suggest that more work is needed in this field in order to establish a good relationship between extractable Fe and P levels.
