Histochemical changes of the liver from rabbits infected with Eimeria stiedai

The pathological and histochemical changes of the liver obtained from the rabbits infected with Eimeria stiedai were studied. The diffuse degeneration of hepatocytes and cell infiltration were the main histopathological changes of the liver in the first 10 days of infection. After the 10th day the histopathology of the liver was characterized by proliferation of fibrous tissue and hyperplasia of bile ducts. The infected liver of the rabbits obtained from the field also presented proliferation of fibrous tissue and hyperplasia of bile ducts. The hepatic glycogen began to decrease 8 days after infection, and was almost exhausted by the 13th day. The ALP activity began to change from the 4-5th day, and reached to peak by the 8-9th day, the activity of ACP was remarkably increased from the 7th day, and the SDH reaction also altered from the 6th day. After the twelfth day the changes of the enzymes were relaxed. The above enzymes in the field infected rabbit liver also changed in some degree. These enzyme changes indicated that the hepatocytes and its organelles, such as mitochondria and lysosomes, were damaged in the first week of infection. The damages were the direct cause of the changes of clinical pathology
