Nutritive value of vegetable and fruit wastes as animal feeds [Egypt]

Four adult Rahmany rams fitted with permanent rumen fistula, were used in digestibility and balance trials to evaluate the agro-industrial by-products of onion, garlic, tomato, okra, jew's mallows, olive and grape. Chemical analysis of the tested by-products showed that okra waste contain the highest ash content (41.5%) and both garlic and tomato wastes contain lower ash content (6.8 and 6.7%). Crude protein content was highest in tomato waste (21.1%) and lowest in Jew's mallow waste (9.6%). Crude fiber content was highest in tomato waste (40.5%) followed by okra waste (10.3%). Ether extract was higher in gralic waste (7%) and lower in olive waste (1.5%). Nitrogen free extract was higher in garlic waste (56.8%) and lower in tomato waste (25.3%).
