Effect of artificial and natural feed on the growth rate, chemical composition and organoleptic properties of Bolti fish (Tilapia Zilli) [Egypt]

Eight experimental enclosures (2m2 each) were used. Two feeding systems, namely natural and artificial, were utilized with a density of 150, 200, 300 and 400 fish / enclosure. Total yield of fish enclosure for artificial feeding decreased with increasing stocking density rate, it ranged from 14.6 to 17.9 kg. The growth rate in all density rates was higher than that for natural raising. In addition the survival rate of the artifically fed groups was also higher. Flesh dry matter, total protein, total ash, Ca, P, Na and K content in artificially fed Bolti fish were higher than those in naturally fed groups. Flesh fat content showed an opposite trend. The highest flesh protein content was found in low stocking rate for both systems of feeding. The best condition factor was found for a stocking density of 200 fish/ enclosure while the poorest condition factor was that of 400 fish / enclosure. Total volatile nitrogen (T.V.N.) and thiobarbituric acid (T.B.A.) values in Bolti fish under natural raising were higher than the other groups under artificial feeding.
