Effect of pruning on yield and fruit quality of Thompson seedless grapes [Egypt]

In 1983 and 1984, mature vines of Thompson seedless grape were pruned at the dormant season to leave 44, 52, 60, or 63 buds per vine on 4 fruit canes and 2 renewal spurs. Raising the bud load per vine was achieved by increasing length of the fruit canes. Increasing the total number of buds per vine raised yield and number of clusters per vine. The highest yield was obtained with a charge of 68 buds per vine on 4 fruit canes each comprised 14 buds and 6 renewal spurs with 2 bud each. The increase in bud load per vine caused reductions in the weight of prunings and clusters as well as in TSS/acid ratio and total sugars content in the must.
