Effect of soil type on the susceptibility of sugar beet varieties to infestation with the main insects and their seasonal fluctuations [Egypt]

Influence of the new reclaimed land (saline soil) compared with normal land (Heavy soil) on the population of main insects on different sugar beet varieties and their seasonal fluctuations in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt, during two successive seasons (1984/1985 and 1986/1987) was studied. Generally, seasonal fluctuation of the beet fly, Pegomya mixta Vill, beet weevil, Lixus junci: Bohr and tortois beetle, Cassida vittata Vill was similar in its trends to the three insects in the two soil type. Insect infestations appeared firstly in sugar beet plants in normal soil 1-2 weeks earlier than in saline soil. Population of the tested insects were more abundant in heavy soil (cultivated land) than in saline soil (undercultivated land)
