Effect of inter-and intra-row spacing on growth, yield and bulb quality of onion cv. "Giza 6" [Egypt]

The present investigation was conducted at the Research Farm, Fac. of Agric. El-Minia Univ., A.R. Egypt, in the two successive winter seasons of 1983/84 and 1984/85, to evaluate the effects of four inter-row spacings; 7.5, 15, 22.5, and 30 cm, and four intra-row spacings; 3.5, 7, 10.5 and 14 cm. on growth, yield and bulb quality of onion cv. "Giza 6" The obtained results indicate that: - Number of leaves/ plant., and bulb and neck diameter were significantly increased with low density, whereas leaf area index showed the reverse. - Total, exportable and small bulb yields were significantly increased with high density planting. Treatments 7.5X3.5 cm. and 7.5x7 cm showed quite similar total and exportable yield, but the latter treatment significantly reduced the small bulb yield as compared to 7.5x3 cm. Low density planting significantly increased the yield of large bulbs (6 cm. diameter) and enhaced the yield of double bulbs.
