Study on the intercropping between roselle and sesame [Egypt]

The intercropping between roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) and sesame (Sesamum indicum, L.) was studied in the experimental farm of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Section, of the Ministry of Agriculture in El Kanater El Khairia, Egypt, during 1985 and 1986 season. It was found that plant height, number of fruits per plant, yield of fresh and dry sepals and organic acids percent in roselle were slightly and insignificantly decreased by the intercropping system. On the contrary, anthocyanine content of the dry sepals was significantly decreased by the intercropping system. The reduction in the yield of dry sepals due to the intercropping was about 10.95%. In contrast, the average yield of seseme seeds in the intercropping system was about 84, of that of single sesame plantation. It could be concluded from this study that the crop value of the intercropping system exceeded that of the single system, and it could be recommended to use a sesame as a suitable combination with roselle.
