Some features of growth and development in Ghanaian crossbred sheep

The effect of breed type, sex, and season of birth on body weight using cover-crops as feed was ascertained using crossbred sheep, African Dwarf, Sahel and Nungua Blackhead. No significant differences (P0.05) in body weight, growth and development were observed between the breed types and sexes, but season of lambing showed significant variations in body weight. Mid-season lambing produced heavier lambs because of improved pasture and nutrition conditions available to the ewes. Pre-weaning growth was faster than post-weaning growth in all the body measurement variables with linear skeletal growth increasing faster and maturing earlier than thickness growth
