Leaf-fall and flowering periodicity in a tropical seasonal forest
1987
Quaye, E.C. (Cape Coast Univ., Cape Coast (Ghana). Dept. of Botany)
The variations in, and relationships between leaf fall and flowering, the role of the environment in their synchronization, and the significance of these phenomena in management of tropical seasonal forests are discussed. Two main patterns of leaf fall, holodeciduousness and semideciduousness, were observed. Leaf fall and flowering are influenced by moisture regime, while the dynamics of seasonal forests are influenced by the deciduous behaviour of the trees. Flowering takes place mostly between December and February which is the peak of the dry season. Timber harvesting concessions and pressure on the land for agricultural purposes endanger seasonal forests in Ghana, and it is imperative that phenological observations, forest dynamics and regeneration are utilised for good forest management
