Report on investigations of some dug-wells in Accra and its surrounding areas [Ghana]

Some 52 dug-wells with depths between 10 m and 30 m, in Accra (Ghana) and surrounding areas were investigated to ascertain their structural safety, rehabilitation and maintenance options, well water quality and well sanitary environment. The wells were lined with materials like bricks, stones, masonry, and concrete cast, but 19 wells have not been raised above ground to form a head wall to prevent children especially falling in, and need serious rehabilitation. 5.6% of the wells pose no threat to life, 75% have fresh non-saline water with total dissolved solide (TDS) less than, 1,000 mg/l, 90% have hardness less than 500 mg/l (suitable for domestic laundering) contain little degradable organic matter but all have high coliform bacteriological counts making the water unsafe for human consumption. They also contain household dirt, floating debris and some with animal droppings due to lack of hygienic considerations
