Problem of contamination of feedstuffs from salmonellae in Greece.

The investigation of the problem started in 1980 and continued as a routine procedure. Results were first reported in 1981 by G. Pitsinidis and L. Efstathiou at the Halkidiki Panhellenic Geotechnical Congress. This is the second report in which assays of at least three times more samples were performed. Contamination percentages on 1388 samples were as follows: Feeds of animal origin: 191 (5.76%), Feeds of plant origin: 502 (5.58%), Complete feeds: 695 (4.17%). The overall contamination was 4.90%. Isolated salmonellae were serotyped at the National Salmonellosis Centre and the number of strains were as follows: Serotype S. Newington, S. Worthington, S. Monophasic Group B1 and C1 and SII Hillbrow were isolated for the first time in Greece
