Increase of frost-resistance of apricot by breeding work

Between the years 1953 and 1963 research work was carried out on a large scale to study local varieties and clone selection. After finishing the selection in 1967 we worked out the program of crossbreeding, in which the best local varieties were included. Our main intention was to increase the frost resistance together with the improvement the fruit size and fruit quality. Since in Hungary the safe production of apricot is uncertain because of the frequent frosts, we attached great importance in our selection work to prevent this factor, we raised several candidate varieties the good value parameters of which reach or exceed the standard requirements, at the same time their frost safety is 38-65 per cent higher than the present standard varieties. We applied for state certification the most important hybrid candidate varieties. These are H.I-5/47, H.I-5/29, H.I-5/33, H.II-6/42, H.II-25/65, H.II-36/26.
