Histology of testicular degeneration and atrophy in swine

The authors carried out the histological investigation of testes, originating from 40 boars of different ages and breeds, castrated due to different causes. The main purpose of the study was to find a morphological background to the frequently observed infertility in boars, also indicated by the results of domestic semen evaluations. In 50 per cent (20) of investigated boars different degrees of testicular degenerations and atrophy were observed. The histologic changes were manifold: lesions, characteristic for the mildest degree of degeneration (appearance of degenerated germinal cells and giant cells in the mostly intact germinal epithelium), and tubular atrophy, caused by necrosis of all the layers of germinal epithelium, were similarly observed. In some cases, the process was accompanied by fibrosis and inflammation. Although, according to the authors' own experience and to the literature data, a close correlation could not be established between infertility, semen evaluation and histologic changes of testis in each case, results of the present study showed that the ratio of abnormal sperm cells was high (teratozoospermia) in the case of severe degeneration.
