Nutritive value of maize stalk sown by different plant densities

The authors analysed the nutririve value of the stalk of the Pioneer 3965 maize that had been sown by 40-60, 60-80, and 80-100 thousand plant/ha density, respectively. The analysis was supplemented by digestibility trials with wethers. Increasing plant density increased the absolute quantity of the yield but it decreased the digestibility and nutritive value of the maize stalk. The absolute figures were as follow: NEm (Mj/kg dry matter):5.42, 5.17 and 4.82, resp.; crude protein (g/kg dry matter): 71.1, 60.80, and 50.60 respectively. The quantity of the digestible crude protein was 95 and 246 kg/ha higher in case of 40-60 thousand plant/ha density on comparison with that of the other two densities. Most energy was produced with 60-80 thousand plant/ha density. On the present investigation the authors could not calculate with the seed production, however on basis of data of relevant literature it seems that both quantity of corn and nutritive value of the stalk is at optimum at 40-80 thousand plant/ha density.
