A further increase of wild boar (Sus scrofa L.) damage may be expected in Hungary

The boars or wild hogs live in Hungary in herds of about 30 individuals that roam in areas of abour 5-6 km diameter. The species seem to increase on the Hungarian Great Plain. Their individual number has risen gradually and continuously and reached more and more the damage level. Their food is quite variable. The most preferred plants are in a decreasing order: oak acorns, maize, Jerusalem artichoke, barley, wheat, oats rye, potato, fodder beet. In Hungary the studies of the authors were concentrated to six areas: Szorosad, Gyongyospata, Szendro, Fuzerkomlos, Izsak, Imrehegy. On the Great Plain 965 hectares, in the Northern Central Range 50-155 hectares and in Transdanubia 25 hectares fall to the share of a boar in the average. The damage caused by boars depends besides their density also on the local level of hunting and game management, not mentioned the size and orientation of the crop stand. In the area of the Kiskunsag National Park many boar herds have found a refuge.
