The control system used against broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.) is based on the recognition that between the sunflowerlines immune or susceptible against the parasite significant physiological and biochemical differences have been found in course of the infective process. In immune plants attacked by the parasite a secondary lignin layer appears in the attachment zone. This layer prevents that the transport vessels of the host and parasite become united in the roots. The author presents a method to recognize susceptible and resistant sunflower varieties and hybrids.
