The N treatments applied were as follows: 8, 80, 160 and 240 kg/ha. In 1985 two hybrids (NK PX 9283 and Mv SC 1466), in 1986 one hybrid (NK PX 9283) and in 1987 two hybrids (NK PX 9283 and Pioneer hybrid 3732/450/SC) were included in the trial. For the so-called destructive growth analysis plant samples were taken on 7 to 13 occasions from the four-leaved stage of development until the phase of full maturity. The effect of various N fertilizer levels exerted on the plant growth of maize plants was characterized by the following indices of growth analysis; crop growth rate (CGR), leaf area index (LAI), leaf area duration (LAD), biomass duration (BMD) and harvest index (HI). The various N fertilizer levels have a notable effect on the dynamics of dry matter accumulation in the maize plant. Dry matter accumulation was characterized by logistic and linear functions. It was pointed out that it is merely in the case of non-limited N supply that the combination of a lasting phase of linear growth and great crop growth rate evolves. The dynamics of growth of the leaf area reliability reflects the effect of N deficiency on growth. Close positive correlations were recorded between CGR and grain yield, accumulated BMD and grain yield as well as between accumulated LAD and grain yield. All three correlations could be characterized by linear functions.
