Effect of saline water on the growth of young olive trees

Young olive trees, Nabali variety (two years old) were grown in plastic pots of 7 kg sand capacity and irrigated with 200 ml of the nutrient solution. Sodum chloride (NaCl) was added to the nutrient solution to give an EC of 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 dsm ** (-1) where death of leaves and chlorosis of the plants were distinct. Analysis of the experiment indicated a decrease in size and number of leaves, and volume of roots in proportion to the level of salt in the nutrient solution. Plants produced 40% new growth when they were grown in a medium content of 0.15% NaCl and Na in the leaves reached 0.29%. It was concluded than that young olive trees can tolerate a SAR in the growth media up to a value of 18 and can produce new growth up to the level of 0.4% Na in their leaves
